UTV and Side-by-Side Shooting Rests: How to Set Up a Steady Rig for Hog and Predator Hunting

Most shots taken off a side-by-side are not planned ones. You are running a fence line, checking a feeder, moving between pastures — and there are hogs in the sendero. Whatever you are going to rest on, you are resting on it in the next few seconds.
That is the part the gear conversation usually skips. A side-by-side is a work machine that happens to be where you are when the opportunity turns up. It is loud, it is not hidden, and nobody is unfolding a tripod off the seat. So the rest either already lives on the machine, or it does not get used.
Side-by-side or high rack: two rigs, two different problems
Both get called hunting vehicles and they are not the same tool.
A side-by-side is a management machine. It is what you are in while you work the place — running senderos, filling feeders, checking water and fence. Hogs, coyotes, and other varmints get taken as part of that job rather than as a separate outing. The rig is loud and it is in plain sight, so the advantage is not stealth; it is that you cover ground and you are already there. What you need is a rest that stays on the machine and is ready without setup, because you will not get time to build a position.
A high rack or a top drive is a purpose-built platform. The whole reason it exists is elevation — South Texas brush runs six to eight feet, and you cannot see through it, so you get above it. That is safari-style hunting: glass from height, spot, then shoot from the rack or climb down. Here the problem is different. You are standing behind a rail rather than sitting behind a door, often at night behind thermal, and that rail is the only thing in front of you to rest on.
Different rigs, same fix: a clamp that grips the structure already there, holds an optic or a rifle steady, and does not require drilling somebody’s machine to do it. The rest of this covers where it goes on each, how the setup changes for hogs and for predators, and which of the three Connect platforms — Aim, Hub, or Deck — fits what you are doing.
Why resting off a machine is harder than it looks
Three things fight you when the rest is a vehicle instead of the ground.
The contact point is round and painted. Roll cage tubing, cab rails, and rack bars are smooth powder-coated steel. A forend laid straight onto one skates sideways at exactly the wrong moment, and you mar the finish doing it.
Height is fixed and usually wrong. You are seated, the animal is not where you planned, and the cage bar sits either under your chin or below your elbow. Without adjustment you end up contorting around the vehicle instead of settling behind the rifle.
Everything is a lever. Hang weight off a bar eighteen inches from where it is clamped and any slack in the connection multiplies. This is where light-duty clamps designed for phones and small electronics give up.
A purpose-built clamp-on platform solves all three: it grips the structure that is already there, it adjusts to where you actually are, and it locks hard enough that the rest is not the variable.
Where a clamp-on rest goes on a side-by-side or ATV
The Connect clamp takes round, square, or rectangular structures from 0.5″ to 2.7″ across, and flat edges of nearly any thickness using the Flat Mount Insert that drops into either jaw. On a hunting machine that covers almost everything you would want:
- Roll cage tubing — the standard spot. Front or rear, driver or passenger side.
- The A-pillar — puts the rest out over the hood, which is the natural firing position from the driver’s seat.
- Cab and bed rails — wider structures on full-size side-by-sides.
- High rack and top-drive rails — including padded ones. The jaws close on the padding without cutting it.
- Blind rails and window frames — the same mount moves off the machine and into a box blind.
- Tailgates and flat panels — via the Flat Mount Insert.
- Bed cage uprights, cab guards, and gun-rack bars.
The point of a clamp rather than a bolt-on bracket is that none of this is permanent. The same mount goes on the cage for the drive, onto the high rack rail when you climb up, and into the blind the following morning. Nothing gets drilled, and nothing stays behind on a machine.
Connect Aim vs Hub vs Deck: which one you actually want
These get confused, and the difference is genuinely simple once you see it. It comes down to how your gear meets the platform.
- Connect Aim is a rest. It carries a V-shaped TPU cradle. The rifle sets into it — nothing bolts on, nothing threads together. You lift the rifle out and you are done. It is the fastest of the three to use and the one that behaves most like shooting sticks, except it does not fall over.
- Connect Hub is a mount. Gear bolts onto it through a 3/8″ and 1/4″ compatible through-hole on a 3″ wide plate. Add a ballhead, a panhead, a saddle mount, or an Arca-Swiss setup and you have one piece of gear locked rock-solid — a heavy rifle, a large spotting scope, or a long-lens camera.
- Connect Deck is a platform. A 10″ × 6.5″ deck with ten 1/4″ slots and twelve 3/8″ through-holes, for staging several things at once — optics, electronics, a rangefinder, a thermal, tools.
The short version. If you want to steady a rifle and move on, take the Aim. If you want one serious optic or rifle locked down hard and adjustable, take the Hub. If the problem is that you have five things and nowhere to put them, take the Deck.

Which one for hogs?
Most hog hunters end up on the Aim or the Hub. The Aim wins when you are getting in and out of the machine and want the rifle in hand instantly. The Hub wins when the rifle stays on the mount for a long sit, or when you are running a heavier setup and want it locked rather than resting.
Which one for glassing?
The Hub, without much argument. It is built around one primary piece of gear held rock-solid, and a large spotting scope on a ballhead is exactly that job. Pair it with the Deck if you also want the rangefinder and thermal staged somewhere other than the seat beside you.
Setting up for hogs
Hogs punish an unsteady rest more than most hunting does. The shot comes fast, usually at last light or after dark, often at an angle you did not choose, and there is rarely just one animal. Much of it happens off the machine itself — working into the wind with a light bar or a thermal, stopping when you find them. What matters is that the rest is already in position before the hogs are.
Leave it on the machine. This is the part people get backwards. The mount is not something you fit when you see hogs — it lives on the cage the way the light bar does, and it is set before you leave the barn. The clamp is there so you do not have to drill the machine and so it comes off when you want to run it on a different setup or location on the same rig.
Get the height right for a seated shot. The telescoping offset bar on the Hub adjusts from 8.5″ to 17.5″ with 360° rotation at the connection points, and there are four independent lock-out points for angle. That range exists so you can settle into the shot rather than build a position around wherever the bar happened to be.
Think about the swing. Hogs move. Mount on the side you expect to shoot toward and leave the pivot friction snug rather than locked, so the rest tracks with you and holds wherever you stop. The Hub’s 290° Locking Pivot Bracket has a friction stage for exactly this and a secondary lockout that drops into a notch when you want zero movement.
Running thermal or night optics. Heavier scopes and clip-on units put more weight further forward, which is precisely when a mount that is only sort of tight starts to matter. The Hub is capable of supporting 55+ lbs, so the optic is not the problem — but do check the structure you clamped to. A flimsy accessory bar stays flimsy no matter what is gripping it.
Rules for hunting hogs at night, with lights, or with thermal vary by state and sometimes by county, and on private land they often depend on landowner permission. Check your own before you plan around it.
Setting up for predators and varmints
Calling coyotes, bobcats, and foxes is a different problem from hogs. You are usually stationary, often for twenty minutes at a stretch, and the shot can come from any direction — frequently the one you were not watching.
That makes rotation the feature that matters. A rest that only covers the arc you set it to is half a rest. Set the pivot friction so the platform swings under light hand pressure and holds where you leave it, and mount high enough to clear the hood or the door so you are not fighting the machine for the last thirty degrees.
For prairie dogs and other high-volume varmint work the calculation changes again: you are shooting a lot, from one spot, and fatigue is the enemy. This is where a mount beats a rest — bolt the rifle down through the Hub and let the platform hold the weight between shots instead of your arms.
Which machines this fits
Because the clamp grips structure rather than bolting to a model-specific bracket, fitment is a question about the tube you are clamping to, not about the badge on the hood. If the structure is round, square, or rectangular between 0.5″ and 2.7″, or flat and reachable with the Flat Mount Insert, it will clamp.

Setting it up, start to finish
- Pick the side you shoot toward. For most right-handed shooters seated on the left, that is the A-pillar or the front cage upright on the driver’s side.
- Measure the tube. 0.5″ to 2.7″ clamps directly. Flat or odd-shaped structures take the Flat Mount Insert, which also shims tubing the jaws do not fully wrap.
- Clamp low, build up. Get the base tight first with the ratcheting handle, then set the offset bar length, then the angle. Setting the angle before the base is tight means doing it twice.
- Set your height seated, not standing. Sit in the machine the way you will when you shoot and adjust from there.
- (For the Hub + ballhead) Decide friction or locked. Friction to track a moving animal, hard lockout for a fixed lane or a long glassing session.
- Check it after the first rough mile. Not because it loosens, but because it is worth knowing your setup is right before you are relying on it.

Will it hold a heavier setup?
The clamp applies 500+ lbs of clamping force and is capable of supporting 55+ lbs, so the mount is not usually the limiting factor. What matters more is the structure you clamp it to — a solid roll cage upright is a very different thing from a thin accessory bar.
Can I move it between a machine and a blind?
Yes, and that is the point of a clamp. The same mount goes on a roll cage, a high rack rail, a blind window frame, a range bench, or a tailgate. Nothing is left behind on the vehicle.
Will it mark the paint or powder coat?
